How are your presentation skills...really?Do your knees knock when asked to speak in front of a group? Or do you ham it up in the board room? Either way, could your presentation skills use a polish?
After years of being asked "when are you going to host a public workshop?" I've done it! I'm volunteering to teach a full day presentation skills course coordinated by my favorite community leadership group JCI: it happens April 3rd but deadline is THIS Friday!!
This program is open to JCI members and the entire public (men, women, old, young) - that's YOU! JCI, is keeping the registration price at just $99 (including lunch). Registration deadline = March 25th so do it NOW! And please forward this to friends. It's a rare chance to learn exactly what helped me win the World Effective Speaking Championship in Japan. Improving your presentaiton skills will help you LEAP forward in your career, whatever your line of work.
Join us Sunday April 3rd from 9am to 4pm at the Sandman Inn, Kelowna, BC, Canada. For more info on this and the whole weekend of events (including a fabulous community responsibility program on Saturday) visit this JCI community webpage: scroll to the bottom of the page for the effective speaking course info. Or skip that step and go straight here to book your ticket for the event! After all...what do you have to gain?
Welcome readers from IH-IMIT, SFU, CAPS, URBA, Diversicare, and UBC-O!!

Rituals of FocusPause for effect(iveness)10 minutes ago I received news that a man I admire, a colleague I’ve known for years, is terminally ill. The cancer he beat last year is back. Through these tears, I am forced to pause. Really pause. Think about the last time you really paused amidst the busy-ness of your life.
I’m going to write him now. To tell him what I most need to tell him. - - - I’m back. Days have passed. And now I’m writing you. We are all forced to pause with news like that: priorities become crystal clear. We are moved to act. We’re not distracted by a text or an email or a shiny object. We know what’s important and we do it.
True high performers don’t wait for a forced-pause. They make pausing a ritual. That’s how they ensure that they focus on the most important things. In their work and in their lives.
Pause. Focus. Then act.
Fast focus tips: According to Ann Gomez and Mark Ellwood, high performing executives spend 27% of their time pausing to ponder the big picture - email me if you’d like a copy of their article called “Time at the Top”.
That ratio may never fit your work or your life. But imagine how much more effective you might be if you started each day with clarity about what’s important?
Over the past 10 years I’ve helped my coaching clients and audiences create pause-time. Some choose to pause every day. Some once per week. Here are tips to create your own focus ritual: - Push away from the desk: pause time is much different than other work. It’s not about hunkering over your computer. It’s not about shuffling items on your to-do list. It’s about pushing back and reflecting on the bigger picture. Treat it differently right from the start. - Build the environment: If you want to be consistent, carefully choose the place and time that fit your life. Where: your office, a board room, home? When: before you get out of bed, after meditating, when you arrive at the office? If you can, attach this pause time to something that’s already consistent (a meal, a coffee break, or another ritual). - Gaze inward: When you learn a friend is dying, what’s suddenly most important? When you’re told this is going to be the best year of your career what mental picture do you conjure up? Those are your real priorities. Write down 3 things that are really important in the next 3 months. - Gaze back: In the past week (or day) what did I do right in my big priorities? Celebrate that. Pausing to celebrate creates energy to stay focused. - Gaze forward: What 3 things must I do this week (or today) to move forward on those key priorities? - Gather the tools: This pause moment will be more focused if you have a binder with your goals, your vision of your future, and your commitments from last time in it. Keep it handy - it's like your accountability coach.
This is the year to stop trying and start doing what's most important. Resolve isn't enough - you need rituals. Can you really afford to wait any longer?
