You can't say anything witty in 2 seconds

Mastery tips for building connection

How long does it take you to decide if you like someone – to connect or not? A few minutes? Less than 30 seconds?

According to Tom Rath’s research, it takes just 2 seconds.

That’s a lot of pressure! After all, you can’t say anything witty in 2 seconds. So how do you build connection fast with the important people in your life? Friends, colleagues and clients? What ‘first impression’ do you give each time you walk into a room?

If you’re giving off the attitude of distracted, annoyed or busy you’re missing the mark. High performers connect because they are really present AND genuinely focused on others. Try these mastery tips for connecting from Nicholas Boothman’s book “How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less”:
- Hold eye contact long enough to read their exact eye color: just don’t announce that’s what you’re doing. It will creep them out. The point of this is to hold eye contact just a little longer than usual, which shows connection and trust. When was the last time you really paused and held eye contact in a conversation?
- Lean in: to show you’re paying full attention. Something amazing will happen – the conversation will feel more interesting to you! Your body language pulls your mind into a deeper sense of engagement.
- Choose a useful attitude to enter the room with: because in 2 seconds, attitude is all you can project. Think about someone you want to connect with. Now choose one of Boothman’s useful attitudes to consciously adopt with them: warm, enthusiastic, confident, supportive, relaxed, curious, helpful, patient, or interested.

These are powerful tools for connection – use them for good, not for evil!

July is all about connection for me...
* Connecting with friends on Canada Day weekend.
* Connecting with colleagues like Troy (see the side bar – I am bursting with excitement for Troy’s BIG day…which is TODAY).
* And connecting with the clients that I have been so blessed to serve throughout the start of 2011. (On that note: welcome to new readers I met this month from Flint Energy, UBC-O, Vitalize, Grant Thornton, Diversicare and Western Group Financial)

Who will you connect with in the next month? Pause. Lean in. Connect.

We don't need more will power to achieve high performance. We need rituals. You have everything within that you need to create a new ritual for relationships TODAY. Can you really afford to wait any longer?

This book will WOW you!

Don’t you just love a good story?

Well this one isn’t.

I mean it starts out with an awful tale of a young child brought up in a number of highly dysfunctional families. We’ve learned that many kids brought up like this end up in jail, on drugs, or dead. Fortunately for Troy Payne, the author of the book I am about to share with you (and someone who has become a trusted colleague, friend and “like a brother” to me) he found a way out. The book launch is today - go to http://wrbook.net and see for yourself the story behind the story.

Today Troy gets up on stage with his Rock’N Resiliency Project and helps thousands of people discover simple ways to change their life’s path.

Do you know anyone who was given a raw deal in life? Friends, family members, maybe work associates? Maybe you grew up and experienced things you would like to forget.

Troy has taken the lessons he learned in his own experience and found a way to make it easy for anyone to use in their own life.

He has an incredible story to share and just yesterday his book hit best-seller status…

…today (Wednesday, June 29th) he is pulling out all the stops to bring it to #1 on the best seller list!

Troy has arranged a bundle of free gifts if you buy The Road to Resiliency today, tallying over $1000 worth, and including one from me! Please pick up a copy or 2 or 3 (they make perfect gifts for anyone in your life that needs a helping hand). I have 2 copies on my desk right now.

I can’t do it justice here, but the website can http://wrbook.net  Check it out and then forward the link to friends or post on FB, LinkedIn and Twitter. Spread the word TODAY!

Thanks for your help.

Indeed, this is the year to stop trying and start doing what's most important. We don't need more will power. We need rituals. And Troy will teach you amazing rituals for resilience in his book.
