the should-message is heard

Last month I shared tales of the macramé jungle. It inspired readers to write in about all the shoulds they were letting go of. Some have even posted “though shall not should upon thyself” on their refrigerators and computer wall paper.

Here is an exerpt of one of the email responese I recevied from an inspired (and inspiring) reader…

This summer I took a vacation to visit family and friends back home. It was wonderful…but as the end approached I felt bad. I had not accomplished as much as I had hoped. I’d arrived with a long mental list of people I should see and activities I should do. Of course this list grew and grew every day, and my fulfillment dwindled as time raced by.

Your article made me see that I didn’t have to run around thinking “I should”. So I created a list of "what I DID accomplish this summer” and I did very well. Lesson learned – prioritize and do what I can!! Thank you Rhonda.

This is a beautiful idea! And I love how it creates gratitude for what you DID and even WHO you are.

After reading her email I became very conscious of how I was describing my summer of work and my summer vacation. Instead of the standard "summer zipped by too fast" I drew my attention to all the great things. The inspiring clients I coached. The afternoon trips to the beach with the kids. And our rockin' trip to Tofino in August.

With Fall in full swing, ditch the shoulds. Your business and your life will be better for it!!

something BIGger

I think of September as my New Year. But this time around it feels different: I’m not diving in with my usual gusto for “back to school – back to work”. There is still gusto, but it’s tempered. Patient. Like calm urgency, which ironically was the topic for my January newsletter...kicking off the actual calendar New Year.

This calm urgency is compelling me to work toward something BIGger in my work and my life. And as I pause to look around, I’m seeing others work toward something BIG of their own, all at varying stages of completion.

At the inception stage is one of my best friends – a true free spirit. She was invited to jet away this Fall on a new adventure. To her own amazement she wasn’t enticed by it. “I feel like I want to work toward something BIGger. I want to root down into something. I don’t know exactly what this will look like yet. But I feel compelled to do it.”

Do you feel compelled to do something different? Something bigger or rooted? What might it be?

At the perseverance stage is my esteemed colleague and fellow speaker Andrea Holwegner, the chocoholic dietician. She recently shared the perseverance of parenthood: talk about something BIGGER. Her article is choc-full (chocolate pun not intended but after I mis-typed chock I had to leave it in) of amazing strategies to stay the course. It’s called Good Things Come to Those Who Wait.

Have you tackled a BIG goal this year? With your work? With life? With weight loss – Andrea’s specialty? What people and resources can you tap into so you can persevere?

And at the completion stage is an entrepreneur I’ve studied under for 10 years, Lisa Frenette. Her yoga and Pilates practise has grown from a few classes in a community centre to the recent launch of her own group studio on her gorgeous farm property in southeast Kelowna, BC. I was in a class yesterday with my mat outstretched next to the wood burning fireplace, gazing out the window at her majestic horses. Take a class with her to see how she embodies a nurturing return to rural roots – she’s brought her vision to life!

Are you close to bringing your vision to life at work? In your personal relationships? Have you created a clear vision for what you want?

So with each of these 3 folks as inspiration, what BIG thing am I compelled to work toward?

Writing my own book!

I’ve co-authored 2 books. And each year I ask, is this the time to write my own? Finally...it’s time! In the months ahead I’ll share the journey with you and ask for input. I’m excited! In a calm urgent kind of way.

So, how about you? Is this Fall the time to work toward something BIGger? Or the time to simplify and let go? What one thing will you commit to this coming month? Write me – I want to hear it!

Here's to a Fall filled with FOCUS and ACTION. Focus on one. Act on one. Just one BIG gem at a time. This is the year to stop TRYing and start DOing!
